Liberty Media CEO wants a race through Manhattan

With Liberty Media continuing its expansion into the United States, NYC Mayor Eric Adams wants in on the action. CEO of Liberty Media, isn’t biting.

If we go back to 2011, then owner of F1, Bernie Ecclestone, made it clear he wanted to see an F1 race in the Big Apple. Plans were made, the organization had been setup and the race was even put on the calendar for 2013. The race didn’t happen due to lack of money.

A Fight We Have No Interest In

Liberty Media CEO Greg Maffei said at an event in New York that the chances of having a New York GP are very slim. The site Adams has identified for the possible F1 race, on Randalls Island, is not a perfect venue for the current F1 owner. It seems that Liberty Media would only agree to a street race through Manhattan past the city’s iconic sites. Anyone that’s ever been to New York City knows that’s not very likely, and Maffei has his doubts as well.

Maffei says he “cannot imagine Central Park being closed” for the race and that therefore in all likelihood there will be no New York GP.

While a fourth US Grand Prix isn’t out of the question, it seems that the very specific requirements of Liberty Media would have to be met.
